National Cash Register
1910
This register is from Dayton, Ohio. It was the floor model and has on top of its original cabinet and drawers.
Registers were a centerpiece of a store and a source of pride for a business hence why they are often elaborate and ornate. They were complex mechanical computers.
Take a look in the top drawer of the cabinet below the register. You will find handwritten receipts from 70 years ago. You can see what groceries people were buying and at what prices.

Ice Boxes
Ice Boxes were used from 1803 to the 1930's to keep food cold. They were usually made of wood with hollow walls lined with tin or zinc. The walls were insulated with sawdust, straw, cork or sea weed. A large block of ice was placed in a drawer. The cold air circulated down and around the food storage compartments. A drip pan caught the water as the ice melted and was used for drinking.
Ice men delivered blocks of ice daily in 25, 50, 75 or 100 pound blocks. The ice was harvested from frozen lakes and rivers in winter and stored in pits or caves.
